First published in 1939, Always a Little Further quickly established itself as a Scottish climbing classic. In portraying a group of rank-&-file climbers from Glasgow who sought merely to enjoy the freedom of the mountains & the fellowship of shared experience, it presents a very different view of mountaineering than is found in many more `serious` books on the subject. From early beginnings in Arrochar & on Skye the group graduate to bigger things around Glencoe & Ben Nevis. The climbing merely provides the background to the story & it is the travelling, the characters & the colourful life of road, campsite & bothy that form the main focus of attention. There are stories about motor-cyclists, hitch-hikers, berry-pickers, bird-watchers & `gangrels of all sorts`. The bizarre characters & events are entertainingly described & a `rollicking humour` runs through the narrative. These are light-hearted tales, filled with the enthusiasm of carefree youth & displaying a genuine love of the Scottish hills. For this reason Always a Little Further is rightly regarded as a classic reflecting an aspect of mountaineering life hardly touched in other accounts. ...

One of the titles in a series of topographic maps covering much of north-west Africa, produced as part of the IMW* project in 1960’s. Each map covers an area spanning 6° in longitude & 4° in latitude. There is some variation in colouring & the depiction of terrain, but hill-shading, spot heights & contours are used to show the general relief. Additional graphics show features such as dunes, rock outcrops, cliffs, sand areas, escarpments, marshes, seasonal lakes & watercourses, & areas liable to flooding. Bathymetric contours are also included. Communications detail

roads, major trails & railways, although there is some inconsistency in colouring & the extent of classification, e.g. not all maps distinguish seasonal roads. On most maps intermediate road distances are indicated on main routes. Symbols show airports, mosques, mines, oil & gas fields, lighthouses, ruins & significant isolated buildings. Administrative boundaries are marked & latitude & longitude lines are drawn at 1° intervals, with further margin ticks at 1’ intervals. The map legend is in French only on some sheets, & in English & French on others.* The International Map of the World was a project conceived in the early 20th century to compile a world map series at 1:1, 000, 000 through the efforts of participating nations. The value of the program has declined since 1970 & the IMW is no longer regarded as an active international series.

Always The Children

Anne Watts grew up in a small village in north Wales in the 1940s. Inspired by school geography lessons that told of far-off lands, she broke out of the conventional options open to women in post-war Britain, defying her Merchant Navy father`s dated views. She trained as a nurse and midwife, joined the Save the Children Fund, and was posted to Vietnam in 1967. One of only three British nurses in the region, Anne was faced with a vision of hell that her training at Manchester`s Royal Infirmary had barely prepared her for. Thrown in at the deep end, she witnessed the random cruelty of warfare, nursing injured and orphaned children and caring for wounded and dying servicemen. She went on to take her skills to the victims of Pol Pot`s Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, to Lebanon during the
Israeli occupation, and Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. Over some forty-five years Anne has brought her courage and compassion to those most in need of help. Woven into this vivid, compelling memoir is perhaps the most moving story of all - how Anne`s idyllic childhood was shattered by a shocking family tragedy when she was 10 years old. A tragedy that was to shape her destiny.
