When Peter Stothard, editor of the Times Literary Supplement, finds himself stranded in Alexandria in the winter of 2010 after his flight to South Africa has been cancelled, he sets out to explore a nation on the brink of revolution. Guided by two native Egyptians, Stothard traces his own life-long interest in the history of Cleopatra, & his repeated failure to write the book about her that he had always wanted to. In Alexandria, part memoir & part travel literature, Stothard was the sights & sounds of the ancient city to reconnect with the formative experiences of his childhood education, & his literary career. Melancholy & sometimes humorous, Alexandria offers a first-hand glimpse into the fracturing police state of Hosni Mubarak, before the uprising in Tahir Square changed everything. ...

Created 2, 300 years ago at the wish of Alexander the Great, Alexandria is still the largest city in the Mediterranean world. It evokes a succession of images
- the Tomb of Alexander, the Pharos, the Library, Antony & Cleopatra, Cavafy & Durrell, all reminders of its magnificence & cultural influence. Over the centuries it has known many setbacks. In 1820, with the advent of Mohammed Ali, it began to reawaken, & became a model of cosmopolitanism of which many still regret the passing. Today, with the building of the great new library, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the city is again looking to the future.

In the autumn of 1915, in a ”slightly heroic mood”, E.M. Forster arrived in Alexandria, full of lofty ideals as a volunteer for the Red Cross. Yet most of his time was spent exploring ”the magic, antiquity & complexity” of the place in order to cope with living in what he saw as a ”funk-hole”. With a novelist`s pen, he brings to life the fabled, romantic city of Alexander the Great, capital of Graeco-Roman Egypt, beacon of light & culture symbolised by the Pharos, where the doomed love affair of Antony & Cleopatra was played out & the greatest library the world has ever known was built. Threading 3, 000 years of history with vibrant strands of literature & punctuating the narrative with his own experiences, Forster immortalised Alexandria, painting an incomparable portrait of the great city &, inadvertently, himself. ...

Finding himself in Alexandria in the winter of 2010, Peter Stothard, editor of the TLS & former editor of The Times, is forced to contemplate his past in circumstances he does not expect. The aftermath of a bombing & the onset of the Arab Spring place obstacles in his plans to complete a long-delayed biography of Cleopatra. Minded by two guides, whose motives are mixed & mysterious, he visits Alexandria`s ancient sites & revisits places & people from his own life, an Essex childhood among military engineers, Latin & Greek at Oxford & journalism high & low in London. In this extraordinary book, part memoir & part travel literature, written against the background of the fracturing police state of Egypt, a man & a woman from the author`s school days are as pressing as the political minders of today. ...

Topographic coverage of mainland Spain at 1:50, 000 in the MTN50 (Mapa Topográfico Nacional) series from the Centro Nacional de Información Geografica, the country’s civilian survey organization. The maps have contours at 20m intervals, enhanced by relief shading, plus colouring and/or graphics to show different types of terrain, vegetation or land use. Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale, detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). Each map covers 29.5x 18.5 km (with adjustments in the border or coastal areas). The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus margin ticks for latitude & longitude at 1` intervals. Map legend is in Spanish only.HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT 50K MAP: all the titles in CNIG’s 200K Provincial Road Maps series at 1:200, 000 are overprinted with the grid for the 1:50, 000 maps & can be used to see the area covered by each 50K title. TO SEE THE LIST OF TITLES IN THIS SERIES PLEASE CLICK ON THE SERIES LINK.PLEASE NOTE
- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.

Alexandria Lost

Alexandria Lost is a collection of three stories by Alan Smart. Each story contains a sense of loss - not the loss that breeds nostalgia, but, rather the feeling that all human things will pass, while the city of Alexandria remains. A survivor of the Second World War has lost the will to live until confronted by the bomb-shattered hand of a young Bedouin girl. An exile lying in an English hospital bed contemplates the city he longs to reject. A chance remark sends an old woman out into the streets of her hometown on an uncertain quest.
