The Western Hemisphere in the third quarter of the 19th century on a cloth-backed reproduction of a map drawn by the Stanford’s Geographical Establishment & “published under the direction of the Committee of General Literature & Education Appointed by The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge & of the National Society”. Individual countries are presented in gentle pastel hues typical of h&-coloured maps, with their borders outlined in stronger colours. The publication date of 1877 gives us the Americas more or less as we know them now but Antarctica with only a handful of coastal places named & believed to be flat as a pancake. Hachures are used to show the mountain ranges & many other features of contemporary cartography are included: ocean currents & trade winds, surrounding frames showing the tropical zones & the position of the sun, etc. Latitude & longitude lines are drawn at 10° intervals. Additional panels on this map of the Western Hemisphere give examples of six different map projections. North Reddish & South West Denton in 1904 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. The map is dominated by Gorton Road which runs up its western side, with coverage stretching from St Elisabeth`s church & St Joseph`s RC church northward to St Agnes church & Reddish station. Other features here include Summerfield House, tramways, Reddish Iron Works, Ashbrook Farm, Barlow Fold. Further east the map is semi-rural, with two railways, the LNWR Stockport to Guide Bridge line & Sheffield & Midland Joint line crossing in the centre of the map. Other features include Denton Colliery sidings & mineral line, Holt Wood, Dane Bank, Denton Hall, etc. On the reverse is a large extract from the later 1914 revision of the map, showing the Gorton Road area at this later date for comparison.
