There can be no better way of getting to know Ireland than by visiting its racecourses: from the glamour of Leopardstown & the class of The Curragh to the majestic mountains around Killarney; from the warm welcome at Gowran Park & Clonmel to the summer holidaymakers` meetings & `industry` days in the winter months. At any one of these venues, you might catch a glimpse of a future Cheltenham Gold Cup champion or Derby winner in action.” Horses for Courses” guides readers through a typical year in Irish racing & highlights the individuality of each venue. All have their own special qualities & atmosphere but share two common traits: a warm welcome & good sport. & that is what the author believes Irish racing is all about. The country`s courses enjoy a huge level of support from the local population. It might be raining & some of the races may be `ordinary` but the stands will always be crowded. That is because racing is part of Irish culture & the nation`s way of life: with 27 courses, it has proportionately far more venues than Great Britain. Meticulously researched & passionately written, ” Horses for Courses” is the definitive guide to Ireland`s racecourses & is essential reading for horse-racing enthusiasts everywhere. ...

On the outskirts of Casablanca, next to the dump, is the shantytown of Sidi Moumen, where Yachine & his ten brothers grew up, in the aimless chaos of drugs, violence, unemployment, & despair. The barefoot boys started their own football team-the Stars of Sidi Moumen. They played amongst the rocks, detritus, & buried skeletons of the dump but they dreamed of becoming the best football players of all time. From the grave, Yachine remembers the ugliness but also recalls his fond memories of childhood: ”I`m not ashamed to tell you I was sometimes happy in that hideous squalor, on the filth of that accursed cesspit, yes, I was happy in Sidi Moumen, my home.. ” Then their dreams changed. Yachine`s older brother Hamid started growing a beard & attending religious meetings with Sheikh Abou Zoubeir. Week after week, the sheikh beguiled the Stars of Sidi Moumen into believing that there was a better world in the afterlife, where their faith in Allah would be rewarded. They needed only to choose between dying gloriously & together, or living disgracefully & alone. For Yachine & his brother, the choice was clear. ...

The lure of a long-distance ride leads Mefo Phillips to team up with her sister Susie & their spotted Appaloosa horses Leo, a flirt with a passion for Mars Bars, & affectionate, gluttonous Apollo, for a pilgrimage down the medievil Way of St. James from Canterbury to Spain. The lure of a map of European glof courses entices Mefo`s husband Peter to follow them in a rackety old horsebox... Slowed by thunderstorms, vertgo, worn-out horseshoes & a variety of eccentric farmers, it`s boiling midsummer by the time they reach the Castilian plains after a meander across lush springtime France. With 1, 700 miles, four mountain ranges, & encounters with galloping goats, nude pilgrims, rampant donkeys & a fountain of red wine behind them, horses & humans are inseparable by the time they reach Santiago & the suddenly daunting prospect of a trundle in the horsebox back to England & a normal life. ...

Topographic coverage of mainland Spain at 1:50, 000 in the MTN50 (Mapa Topográfico Nacional) series from the Centro Nacional de Información Geografica, the country’s civilian survey organization. The maps have contours at 20m intervals, enhanced by relief shading, plus colouring and/or graphics to show different types of terrain, vegetation or land use. Boundaries of national parks & other protected areas are marked. In addition to all the usual information featured on topographic mapping at this scale, detailed presentation of the road & rail networks, rural tracks & paths, etc, the maps also show campsites & mountain refuges. On more recent editions some GRs, the official long-distance hiking routes, are also marked (although not as clearly as on hiking maps from other publishers). Each map covers 29.5x 18.5 km (with adjustments in the border or coastal areas). The maps have a 1-km UTM grid, plus margin ticks for latitude & longitude at 1` intervals. Map legend is in Spanish only.HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT 50K MAP: all the titles in CNIG’s 200K Provincial Road Maps series at 1:200, 000 are overprinted with the grid for the 1:50, 000 maps & can be used to see the area covered by each 50K title. TO SEE THE LIST OF TITLES IN THIS SERIES PLEASE CLICK ON THE SERIES LINK.PLEASE NOTE
- MAP TITLES: the grids shown on our website serve both the civilian & the military 1:50, 000 topographic series. Although the areas covered by maps in both series are identical (apart from some border or coastal sheets), occasionally map titles differ – only one title is shown on the grid, usually the military one. In Galicia, the Basque country & in the Catalan speaking areas the tendency now is to use local place names rather than the often better known Castilian ones. Where possible, both versions are included in our titles. Map titles listed on our website are based on information received by us at the time of publication, but sometimes maps arrive showing a completely different title! As long as the map number is as ordered, the correct map has been supplied.
