The history & culture of Europe has been decisively shaped by the exploration & use of the seas surrounding Europe. This catalogue book reflects the significance of the sea as a space of rule & trade for Europeans, as bridge & border, as resource & a site of desire. The book also reviews the changing perception of the sea in the arts. Europe is a maritime continent: measured by the length of its coasts & its total size, none of the five continental masses on the planet has more points of cont act with the seas than Europe. The importance of the sea for the development of European civilisation is illustrated by the themes of myths, shipbuilding & seafaring, rule of the seas, European coastal trade, expansion, the slave trade, migration, the ma ritime global economy, resources, oceanography, tourism, & the artistic perception of the sea. Thirteen themes, each linked to a port city, range from Antiquity to the present day & demonstrate that the domination of the seas was a central component of European power politics for centuries. ...

The societies of the European Bronze Age produced elaborate artifacts & were drawn into a wide trade network extending over the whole of Europe, even though they were economically & politically undiversified. Kristian Kristansen attempts to explain this paradox using a world-systems analysis, & in particular tries to acount for the absence of state formation. He presents his case with a powerful marshalling of the evidence across the whole of Europe & over two millennia. The result is the most coherent overview of this period of European prehistory since the writings of Gordon Childe & Christopher Hawkes. A great strength of this book is the broad European perspective, which allows the author to address some of the larger questions that have been raised in the study of the Bronze Age. It captures the complexity of a prehistorical world at different levels of integration & interaction from local to global. ...

Europe is, in world terms, a relatively minor peninsula attached to the Eurasian land mass, yet it became one of the most innovative regions on the planet, bearing restless adventurers who traversed the globe to trade & often to settle. By the fifteenth century Europe was a driving world force, but the origins of its success have until now remained obscured in prehistory. In this magnificent book, the distinguished archaeologist Barry Cunliffe sees Europe not in terms of states & shifting land boundaries, but as a geographical niche particularly favoured in facing many seas. These & the great transpeninsular rivers ensured a rich diversity of natural resources, & encouraged the interaction of dynamic peoples across networks of communication & exchange. The development of these early Europeans is rooted in complex interplays, shifting balances, geographic & demographic fluidity. Weaving together titanic concepts while remaining sensitive to the specific incidence, this is a tour de force. A bold book of exceptional scholarship & an erudite & engaging narrative, Europe Between the Oceans heralds an entirely new understanding of Old Europe. ...
