Barnehurst in 1897 in a fascinating series of reproductions of old Ordnance Survey plans in the Alan Godfrey Editions, ideal for anyone interested in the history of their neighbourhood or family. Although the map is called Barnehurst, the name scarcely appears on it; it was given to the station opened here in the 1890s & was derived from the owner of the May Place Estate, Colonel Barne, who also happened to be Vice-Chairman of the Bexleyheath Railway Co. An estate would later take that name. The map covers the area from Northumberland Heath in the north-westen corner eastward to North End & Perry Street. Barnehurst station is at the west of the map & the Bexleyheath Railway crosses west-east, joining up with the North Kent Line. To extend cover westward half of sheet 3.14 is included on the reverse, & this takes coverage to the River Darent, Dartford Creek & the Crayford Marshes. Features include Slades Green, Normandy Farm, & other farms; there are also several clay pits with their small tramways.
