Australia in England &8211; 1926 This superb & rare item of Cricket Memorabilia can accurately be dated to the 1926 Ashes series.A William Gunn Superior Extra Special full size cricket bat hand signed to the reverse by the M.C.C. team including Larwood Hobbs Sutcliffe Chapman Carr Geary Tate Hendren & Woolley. It is signed to the front by the Australian tourists to include; Woodfull Ponsford Ryder Gregory Oldfield Grimmett Richardson Mailey Taylor & Collins. In total there are 27 signatures (15 Australia 12 England). This tour is famous as it had the &8216;timeless&8217; Test after the first four Tests were drawn. England regained the Ashes by winning the final match. Because the series was at stake the match was to be "timeless" i.e. played to a finish. Australia had a narrow first innings lead of 22. Jack Hobbs & Herbert Sutcliffe took the score to 49-0 at the end of the second day a lead of 27. Heavy rain fell overnight & next day the pitch soon developed into a traditional sticky wicket. England seemed certain to be bowled out cheaply & to lose the match. In spite of the very difficult batting conditions however Hobbs & Sutcliffe took their partnership to 172 before Hobbs was out for exactly 100. Sutcliffe went on to make 161 & in the end England won the game comfortably. The bat is presented in remarkably good condition considering it&8217;s almost 90 years old & is certainly better than the website images suggest. This bat is a rare & historical item of Ashes Cricket Memorabilia carrying the signatures of many England greats who went on to dominate & were the creators of the infamous Bodyline techniques.
