A truly ingenious jacquard in which a great white shark, shown in three-quarters view, emerges, menacingly from the fine stripe blue & white ground, or should I say 'depths'. Drifting serenely there is also a dolphin, seen side-on. Perhaps there will be a confrontation? I don't know. I think dolphins are quite good at warding off sharks. Anyway, jacquard, as you know, is a pattern formed in the weave & I just love how the illusion of 3D shark has been achieved here. This shirt, apart from being a rather beautiful thing, is notable for its colour combinations. Blue with brown is classically thought to be 'dissonant'. We have a primary
- blue & the true, or painter's tertiary
- brown, which results from an equal mix of the three primaries. These colours are a long way from each other on the colour wheel & so we think of them as dissonant. But, it a rather lovely dissonance even so. The fish are painted simply, but carefully with subtle gradations of tone & strong, confident lines. But we also have a crustacean or two for company! The ground is a pale blue & there is an intriguing kind of visual push-pull of earthy & aqueous tones. The effect is rather expansive & serene. ' Jagger' single button cuff.

The only way he can retrieve his pinkness is to stand behind a flower, one of his legs perfectly aligned with its grassy green stem. Fair enough. It's a slight trompe l'oeil. From a distance you see a pink flamingo, but on closer inspection two closely associated forms are revealed. The shirt lining features the design in blue for contrast & variety.
