In Eastern Europe during World War II, a Romany gypsy camp is besieged by German soldiers. Away from it flee three child refugees: Tomas & his younger brother, Andrej, carrying their baby sister Wilma in a sack. Then, in an abandoned, bombed-out town nearby, the children discover a zoo. In it are a wolf & an eagle, a monkey, a bear, lioness, seal, chamois & llama. The animals tell their stories to the children as they piece together the wreckage of their lives. But as the children try to find a way to release the animals, they also begin to examine what it means to be free… A poignant & magical exploration of war, freedom & courage by the prize-winning of Thursday’s Child.
