It's a unique national clothing item & a simple expression of every conceivable colour with a multitude of applications. The local population (and visitors alike) wear it as a sarong, a sun guard use it as a towel, a baby carrier & of course as a scarf. Due to hot arid winds in the summer months it is especially suited as a head guard protecting the airways against dust. In times of war the blood-red Krama was worn as a sign of loyalty by the notorious Khmer Rouge who also used them as bandages in the field. The war between Vietnam & Cambodia has for generations had immense human repercussions which to this day still causes an excess of human sacrifice & destitution. The plain truth of it can be witnessed by the thousands of landmines that were never removed & hapless families mourning the loss of a loved one or tending the ones crippled by mines while often living below the poverty line themselves. All Kramas are h&-woven by workers at Khmer Life; a non-profit humanitarian organisation whose purpose is to help the victims of landmines along with the ones who cannot help themselves.
