The question & answer format suits what is essentially a hints & tips book rather well. Trudy Friend has a lot of experience both as an artist & as a teacher & the questions she raises have an authentic feel to them. These are things you really are going to want to know, such as, How can I draw twigs & branches that look convincing? or, When I draw hands, how can I prevent them looking like a bunch of bananas? The book is also nicely organised, with six sections covering Trees & Woodlands, Gardens, Still Life, Buildings, Figures & Birds & Animals & there is also an index so that you should quickly be able to locate what you're looking for. Within the main sections, each Q&A is given its own double-page spread, with the simple answer at the top
- in the twigs case, twist the pencil as you work using erratic movements that automatically create angles from which other twigs & branches can emerge. The rest of the space is then devoted to examples of how to put this into practice as well as some handy technical hints & tips. Drawing & Painting Realistic Trees In The Landscape Book With Claudia
Nice

In this beautifully and copiously illustrated new book, Claudia draws on her ability with textures to demonstrate ways of painting trees that are part of a landscape composition rather than just as subjects in their own right. Although the cover proclaims, 'More than 70 species of tree', this is not really its point and, indeed, locating all the varieties is something of a challenge - which is exactly as it should be in this context. You will, however, see how to portray both deciduous trees and evergreens and many different crown and leaf shapes in all the seasons, as well as details of roots, trunks and bark. Except where it's necessary for the purpose of detail work, all of the examples here are shown in the context of a larger composition and Claudia does exactly what the
title tells you she's going to. Claudia begins with basic drawing techniques in pen and ink before progressing to foliage and structure. The remaining chapters introduce specific varieties of tree before concluding with the colours and shapes of autumn and winter. Don't worry that the book has an American pedigree. Although some of the individual species may be unfamiliar, this is a book about colours and shapes, all of which will be instantly recognisable.
