book begins with an
extensive introduction to
botanical painting,
including the materials
you will need and how to
choose your subject as
well as composition,
drawing and the use of
colour. This and the
Six Stages of Painting
that follow are far more
than the usual
preliminary remarks and
are, in fact, some of
the main meat of the
book. By doing things
this way, Michael Lakin
only has to give you one
set of demonstrations
instead of 26, leaving
the rest of the book free
to concentrate on
information specific to
each plant rather than
endless repetition. Each
species is thus dealt
with in two double-page
spreads. The first will
show you details of the
flowers, leaves and
stems and also a drawing
of the whole plant. The
second spread contains
the painting instructions
and the finished work
side by side. This
unusual approach works
well in conjunction with
the introductory sections
and means that you are
presented with all the
information you need both
efficiently and
concisely. Many books on
botanical illustration
(the rather scientific
art of flower painting)
can bog you down in
detail, but Michael
Lakin has found a neat
and innovative way round
this that will make
learning a pleasure. In
the accompanying DVD,
Michael demonstrates how
to paint a snowdrop and a
