This exciting new book from first-time author Hashim Akib (2009 SAA Artist of the Year) is much more about the process of painting than it is about the mechanics of applying paint. As Hashim says, The best tool for learning to paint is to paint, and his colourful and fluent artworks can't fail to encourage you to do just that.
The book is filled with tips and demonstrations, but also with light, colour and urgency that all fully justify the use of Vibrant in the title. Hashim paints in a heavy impasto style that creates a sense of movement and vitality to subjects that include landscapes, portraits, buildings and animals. Intriguingly, he also works from a coloured ground that sets off the overpainting that follows, bringing everything forward as a result and giving real depth to light and shade.
In the DVD he focuses on three contrasting subjects - a landscape: 'Woodland Light', a portrait: 'Hard Life', and an urban-scape: 'Rush Hour'.
In the portrait project, Hashim describes the importance of acclimatising to the scene by creating colour layers, giving depth and texture. His urban-scape project is a great example of how to break a complex scene down into simple, manageable shapes.
The DVD also includes a special feature showing you how to use negative space and shape to create a background, full of tips and techniques to encourage and inspire you.

Dogs are not called man's best friend for nothing, and they're certainly the animal subject you're most likely to come across.
The problem, of course, is that everyone knows what they're supposed to look like and the world will be your harshest critic!
In this new book, Paul Apps provides the outline tracings that are the mainstay of the series, removing at a stroke the first stumbling block you'll meet - the modelling. At once, you're free to concentrate on the painting rather than the drawing and on how to get the colours and the brushstrokes right, how to make fur look strokeable and give eyes their depth.
In five highly-detailed demonstrations, Paul paints different breeds, poses and settings that will give you the confidence to tackle almost any subject. The finished results are both lifelike and filled with life, as doggy, in fact, as you could wish.
In the accompanying DVDs, Paul goes into further detail painting a springer spaniel in a field and a labrador puppy peeping over a fence.

Acrylic is a popular and versatile medium and this handy little book brings to it a favourite subject that deserves a further look that will help you to get started.
After a brief survey of materials, Tim introduces some basic techniques and looks at tone and colour, with some notes on mixing in the specific context of flowers. He follows this with some handy ideas on getting started, with advice on sketching and composition. All of this is necessarily brief in order to leave room for the three demonstrations, which form the main meat of the book. In these, Tim shows you in some detail how to paint wild roses, Black-eyed Susans and a more complex subject, a field of poppies. In each, he mainly uses the oil technique, using the paint undiluted straight from the tube and frequently with knives.
In the DVD Tim takes you through three complete projects: some white magnolia flowers on a bold background, a field of poppies and some stunning roses. Tim shows you how to use the texture and brightness of the white canvas to bring the magnolias to life, how to use the background colour to create dynamic and intense poppies with a pallet knife, and how using both a brush and pallet knife combination can give texture and depth to rose petals and leaf work.
The DVD also contains a bonus feature where Tim gives you a guided tour through the various ways of using the palette knife. As an ambassador for acrylics, Tim will show you just how easy to work with and versatile acrylics are, and how they are perfect for creating bold, impressionistic flowers.
All in all this set is an excellent start for those wanting to get to get to grips with acrylics.
