I have used the outline of a cross stitch day lily & worked two further versions in blackwork & darning patterns, to great effect I think. Each design is worked on a different fabric but all use stranded cottons (floss). The stitch count & design size is the same in each case. You could work all three designs on the same fabric rather than using a mount (mat), otherwise you will need a picture frame & a tripleaperture mount, as shown in the photograph.
