The RSPB & other conservation organisations have for many years protected & managed the places where seabirds breed on l&. Seabirds generally nest in colonies on cliffs, offshore islands & beaches. Perhaps the most beautiful of our breeding seabirds are the terns. There are 5 species of tern which grace our shores – of these the roseate tern & the little tern are the most threatened, & the RSPB is doing all it can to protect them. Not surprisingly because of the massive increase in visitor pressure on our beaches during the summer, the number of little terns in the UK & the number of colonies have declined in the past 20 years. The colonies that remain require protection & management & in many cases RSPB & other conservation organisations such as National Trust & Wildlife Trusts have teams of wardens to look after the birds in the breeding season in Hampshire, Sussex, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Teesside, Cumbria & N Wales. Each one is supported by a dedicated band of site staff & volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the summer to give the terns the best chance of raising chicks & sustaining future generations of terns.
