Taken together, Arthur Koestler's volumes of autobiography constitute an unrivalled study of twentieth-century man & his dilemma. Arrow in the Blue ended with his joining the Communist Party & The Invisible Writing covers some of the most important experiences in his life. We see him in Germany, Russia, Engl&, France & Spain, working sometimes openly & sometimes underground for the cause in which he believed. This was the time of the 'seven years' night' over Europe
- of Hitler's spectacular successes against the Western Democracies. They were also the years of the great Russian purges, which led to Koestlers eventual break with Communism in 1938, after Hitler & Stalin between them had claimed the lives of most of his friends & relatives. This book tells of Koestler's travels through Russia & remote parts of Soviet Central Asia & of his life as an exile. It puts in perspective his experiences in Franco's prisons under sentence of death & in concentration camps in Occupied France (told at greater length in Dialogue with Death & Scum of the Earth), & ends with his escape from Occupied France in 1940 to Engl&, where he found stability & a new home. An epilogue brings the story up to 1953, when it was written. Koestler calls the book 'a typical case history of a member of the educated middle classes of Central Europe in our time'. It has two main themes: the historical background against which the author developed, & an unsparing analysis of his intellectual & spiritual development.

Maggie Gallacher had all but read the print off the elegant, gold-trimmed card. An invitation from the Duke of Moorshire to an evening at Lea Hall? She could still scarcely believe her eyes, even if it was a long-overdue honour
- after all her husband Rod had done for the town.

There were a lot of Gallachers around Fellburn, & all were equally incredulous. Their Mam was a big-hearted woman, with a laugh to match, but was she really the type to go hob-nobbing with the aristocracy? It would be a night to remember, all right!

And indeed it was. But had Maggie, or any of the Gallachers, foreseen how it would turn out, how irrevocably it would change the lives of all of them, she would have torn that invitation into tiny pieces & thrown them on the fire...

' Lord Wellington don't know how to lose a battle.' The view of an anonymous soldier at Waterloo became the judgement of the world on the man who was hailed as the first general of his age. At Waterloo he defeated Napoleon, the master of war, & finally checked the disruptive forces of the French Revolution that had troubled Europe for over twenty years. Wellington taught himself the art of war in India where his hard-fought victories helped lay the foundations of the British raj. His armies liberated Portugal & Spain, shattered the myth of French invincibility & inspired the people of Europe to resist Napoleon. Largely drawn from original sources, Lawrence James's biography follows the life of Wellington the soldier & explains how he waged war & why he won battles. This is also the story of a humane, intelligent & acerbic aristocrat who believed that his kind were predestined to lead. It shows how he stamped his iron will on the men he commanded & how they responded. It reveals Wellington the professional fighting man who created the remarkable intelligence & logistical services that were the keys to his victories. But it was as the national hero who beat Napoleon, gave Europe peace & adhered resolutely to the path of duty that he was honoured by his countrymen who saw him as 'the highest incarnation of English character'. ...

AD 71: Germania Libera: dark dripping forests, inhabited by bloodthirsty barbarians & legendary wild beasts, a furious prophetess who terrorises Rome, & the ghostly spirits of slaughtered Roman legionaries.

Enter Marcus Didius Falco, an Impreisal agent on a special mission: to find the absconding commander of a legion whose loyalty is suspect. Easier said than done, thinks Marcus, as he makes his uneasy way down the Rhenus, trying to forget that back in sunny Rome his girlfriend Helena Justina is being hotly pursued by Titus Caesar. His mood is not enhanced when he discovers his only allies are a woefully inadequate bunch of recruits, their embittered centurion, a rogue dog, & its innocent young master; just the right kind of support for an agent unwillingly trying to tame the Celtic hordes.

The Irish Game: A True Story Of Art And Crime

Vermeer, Goya, Rembrant, Rubens - the Beit art collection was worth millions. For twenty-two years, Sir Alfred and Lady Beit lived peacefully at Russborough, the remote stately home near the Wicklow Mountains that housed their glorious paintings. Then, one spring evening in 1974, the 33-year-old British heiress Rose Dugdale, who had espoused the Irish cause, thought it a good idea to raid Russborough to raise funds for the IRA. She and her gang made off with nineteen paintings, including Vermeer's exquisite Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid. She was quickly tracked down by the diligent Garda and the paintings recovered. But her daring had alerted other criminals to a sitting duck. In 1986 the Dublin gangster Martin Cahill - a criminal so renowned for his tactics they called him
'The General' - planned an audacious burglary of Russborough. He esaped by the skin of his teeth with eighteen masterpieces including, once again, the Vermeer. The rolled canvases were buried in the Wicklow Mountains. However, these beautiful and mysterious paintings were to be the downfall of a criminal who had taunted the Garda for years. The challenge of disposing of such famous works of art forced Cahill to reach outside his familiar world into the international arena, and when he did, his pursuers were waiting. With the storytelling skill of a novelist and the nose of a detective, Matthew Hart uncovers the devious activities of the burglars, fences, art detectives and undercover agents involved in the theft and recovery of Sir Alfred's priceless collection. With pace and
panache, he shows how art theft has changed in recent years, with famous masterpieces acting as collateral among the drug and arms barons. But there is a happy ending: when the stolen paintings were finally recovered, the process of restoring them led to a remarkable discovery about the way Vermeer achieved his magical perspectives, enriching for ever the way we see his art.
