Something Special was previously unpublished except in a 1950s anthology & in Japan, & rediscovered after her death. It is the only short story that Iris Murdoch ever wrote for publication. Set in Dublin, against the vividly recognisable backdrop of the writer's native city in the late fifties, Something Special is the story of Yvonne, an ordinary, bold young Irish woman who believes there's more to life than marriage to Sam, the respectable young man who's courting her. Written with verve & characteristic sly humour, it moves to a surprising climax & conclusion
- a poignant, strangely haunting story about the incompatibility of dreams & desires.

In this fascinating dual biography the eminent musicologist Stephen Citron takes on our two leading contemporary contributors to the lyric stage. His aim has not been to compare or judge one's merits over the other but to trace, through their works & those of their contemporaries, the path of & changes to the musical as an artform. Citron offers a unique insight into each artist's working methods, analysing their scores
- including their early works & works-in-progress. As with Citron's other critically-acclaimed books
- lives of Noel Coward, Cole Porter & Oscar Hammerstein
- significance is given to the impact that their yourthful training & private lives have had upon their amazing creative output. Beginning with Sondheim's lyrics-only works, such as West Side Story & Gypsy through his scores for Company, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park & Passion, all these milestones of musical theatre are explored. Lloyd-Webber's musical contribution, from his early work The Likes of Us to Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, to Whistle Down the Wind is also thoroughly analysed. Sondheim & Lloyd-Webber is essential reading for anyone interested in the contemporary theatre.

Product Description

' It's the end of the 1916 winter & the conditions are almost unbelievable. We live in a world of Somme mud. We sleep in it, work in it, fight in it, wade in it & many of us die in it. We see it, feel it, eat it & curse it, but we can't escape it, not even by dying...'
Private Edward Lynch enlisted in the army when he was just 18. He was one of thousands of fresh-faced men who were proudly waved off by the crowds as they embarked for France. The year was 1916 & the majority had no idea of the reality of the trenches of the Somme, of the pale faced, traumatised soldiers they would encounter there, of the innumerable, awful contradictions of war.
Private Lynch was one of those who survived his time in the trenches. Upon his return from France in 1919 he wrote Somme Mud in pencil in over 20 school exercise books, perhaps in the hope of coming to terms with all that he had witnessed there. Published for the first time, it is a rare & precious find. It vividly captures the horror & magnitude of the First World War, written from the perspective of ordinary infantrymen, rather than officers.
Told with dignity, candour & surprising wit, Somme Mud is a testament to the power of the human spirit
- out of the mud that threatened to suck out a man's soul rises a compelling story of humanity & friendship.
