As a small boy, Readis Lilcamp is rescued by the 'shipfish' when he & his uncle Alemi are caught in a sudden squall beyond Paradise River Hold. AIVAS confirms that the big fish are called dolphins, part of the original settlers of Pern. On Earth they had been partnered with men, having learned to speak intelligible words.

Readis, his Uncle Alemi & bronze Gadareth's rider, T'lion of Eastern Hold, are determined to restore the 'doll fins' to their rightful place in the ecology of Pern...and the partnership of men.

Meanwhile, the fight to rid Pern of the terrible nightmare of Thread is still all consuming. While Lord Jaxom, F'lar & his dragonriders struggle to implement AIVAS' instructions, other challenges are issued & answered, including one which threatens young T'lion in the shape of his older brother, a brown rider, who harbours a deep grudge. & Readis must win his parents' consent to his association with the 'sea dragons of Pern'
- the bottlenose dolphins.

The Domesday Quest: In Search Of The Roots Of England

In 1086, Domesday Book, perhaps the most remarkable historical document in existence, was compiled. This tremendous story of England and its people was made at the behest of the Norman king William the Conqueror. It was called Domesday, the day of judgement, because 'like the day of judgement, its decisions are unalterable'. In Search of the Roots of England is not only a study of the ancient manuscript but an attempt to analyse the world that Domesday Book so vividly portrayed. By skilful use of the Domesday record historian Michael Wood examines Norman society and the Anglo-Saxon, Roman, and even the Iron Age cultures that preceded it. 'Wood is a perceptive, entertaining and enthusiastic companion.' Sunday Times 'Wood is a lively storyteller.' Washington Post
