It was the end of term at Our Glorious School. Most of the pupils were preparing to return home; some were going away on a geography field trip. But for five members of the sixth form, it sounded more fun to embark upon what their friend & mentor Martyn called 'an experiment with real life'
- to spend three days together in The Hole, a windowless cellar room in an unfrequented part of the school buildings. Martyn was to lock them in, & in three days he would come & let them out again.

At first, it all seemed quite a laugh
- eating & drinking, jokes & banter. Solid Mike & dependable Liz, Geoff with his secret supplies of booze, irritating Frankie & delicate Alex
- what a story they would have to tell when Martyn came to release them! How surprised & admiring their friends would be!

But three days passed, & Martyn did not return...

The Hole is a dark & menacing first novel, written when the author was still at school. Compulsive & claustrophobic in quality, it has been compared to John Fowles's The Collector.

When people are told they have cancer, they are apt to feel shocked, angry & frightened. They usually still have the idea that they have 'caught' a fatal disease, &, unless it has been found early on, that they will inevitably slip towards death within a measurable period of a few years or even a few months. Furthermore, most patients still think that only the doctors can help them, & tend to assume that even this help is regrettably limited. For most patients have not yet heard of a very different idea about the nature of cancer & its cure, which is now gaining ground.

You have been told that you have cancer. There is a great deal you can do to help yourself. You have a good chance of reversing your cancer. Take courage!

No one can promise a cure. What can be said is that a growing number of people have pulled themselves round by the methods described in this book, taking responsibility for their health upon themselves. This is not an alternative to orthodox therapy; it is complementary to it, & greatly enhances its effects. It is extending orthodox therapy into areas which it does not usually reach at present.

You can improve the quality of your life, & give the restorative healing forces a better chance to accomplish their task.

So get started on it right away.

A nineteenth century French priest discovers something in his mountain village at the foot of The Pyrenees which enables him to amass & spend a fortune of millions of pounds. The tale seems to begin with buried treasure & then turns into an unprecedented historical detective story
- a modern Grail quest leading back through cryptically coded parchments, secret societies, the Knights Templar, the Cathar heretics of the twelfth & thirteenth centuries & a dynasty of obscure French kings deposed more than 1, 300 years ago. The author's conclusions are persuasive: at the core is not material riches but a secret
- a secret of explosive & controversial proportions, which radiates out from the little Pyrenees village all the way to contemporary politics & the entire edifice of the Christian faith. It involves nothing less than... the Holy Grail.
