' If men could see us as we really are, they would be amazed, 'wrote Charlotte Bront-, the outwardly conventional parson's daughter who had rarely met any men beyond those of the church or classroom by the time Jane Eyre was published in 1847. From the landscape of the Yorkshire moors, an appalling childhood & a family decimated by consumption, Jane Eyre came as an instant literary sensation. It also brought Charlotte Bront- the notoriety that was to remain with her for the rest of her short & tragic life. Elizabeth Gaskell, Charlotte's first biographer, attempted to clear Charlotte of the charges of passionate immorality that were levelled at a woman author
- & an unmarried one at that. Rebecca Fraser, 130 years later, placed Charlotte's life within the perceptual framework of contemporary attitudes to women. Her biography is an invaluable contribution to Bront- scholarship, which shares her admiration for a woman prepared to stand out against some of the cruellest Victorian ideas about her sex.

IN 1942, Charlotte Gray, a young scottish woman, goes to Occupied France on a dual mission: to run an apparantly simple errand for a British special operations group & to search for her lover, an English airman called Peter Gregory, who has gone missing in action. In the small town of Lavaurette, Sebastian Faulks presents a microcosm of France & its agony in 'the black years', here is the full range of collaboration, from the tacit to the enthusiastic, as well as examples of extraordinary courage & altruism. Through the local resistance chief Julien, Charlotte meets his father a Jewish painter whose inspiration has failed him. In Charlotte's friendship with both men, Faulks opens up the theme of false memory & of paradises
- both national & personal
- that appear irredeemably lost. In a series of shocking narrative climaxes in which the full extent of French collusion in the Nazi holocaust is delineated, Faulks brings the story to a resolution of redemptive love. In the delicacy of its writing, the intimacy of its characterisation & its powerful narrative scenes of harrowing public events, CHARLOTTE GRAY is a worthy successor to BIRDSONG.

Charlie Small: The Perfumed Pirates Of Perfidy

No one knows the full story of Charlie Small. At least, not yet. His original battered journal was found washed up on a remote, windswept shore in the north of England. And at first we thought it an elaborate hoax. Surely no eight-year-old could have had so many wild adventures, witnessed so many extraordinary things, lived such an incredible life - and still only be eight. And yet.. . there was something so vivid in the telling, that we were pursuaded, just enough, to send the journal and some of its boggling content for analysis.

The results were absolutely astonishing. And only one conclusion could be drawn. Everything in the journal of Charlie Small is true. He really has wrestled a deadly river croc, ridden a steam-powered rhino, been cabin boy for a band of
desperate lady-pirates and tribal chief in a city of gorillas. And countless other things besides. And.. . not only that.. . even though Charlie Small is only eight, he must have lived for over four hundred years!

This second volume was found encased in ice, high on a glacial plateau in the Himalayas. It details even more remarkable deeds and thrilling acts aboard the Jolly Roger with the dastardly lady-pirates of perfidy - and a lot more besides. It is guaranteed to delight readers as much as Charlie's first journal.

Note: At the time of writing we had just received unconfirmed reports of a third journal, found on a seat at a bus stop in Pimlico. If the diary proves to be further adventures of Charlie Small, rest assured that we will publish it very soon indeed.
Meantime, do please continuing looking out for a young boy with a slightly perplexed look, a battered rucksack and an unlikely talent for swinging through trees...
