Corporations spend billions of dollars annually to woo teen & pre-teen consumers. Over the last 5-10 years, the research of these groups & their behaviour has become very focused on exactly how best to part them (or their parents) with their money. Alissa Quart takes the reader into the disturbing world of teen marketing, showing how they are taught to market to each other & where adults build careers out of insinuating their way into 'friendships' with teens in order to monitor what they wear, eat, listen to & talk about with each other. This compelling book looks into the way teens succumb to peer pressure & the constant commercial battering & the young people who fight back, who turn the tables on the cock-sure mega-corporations who so cynically strive to crack the codes of teen cool. These kids prove it isn't necessary to give in to branding, but it is a drop in the water when an entire generation is being raised to consume. ...

Far in the future, the World Controllers have created the ideal society. Through clever use of genetic engineering, brainwashing & recreational sex & drugs all its members are happy consumers. Bernard Marx seems alone in feeling discontent. Harbouring an unnatural desire for solitude, & a perverse distaste for the pleasures of compulsory promiscuity, Bernard has an ill-defined longing to break free. A visit to one of the few remaining Savage Reservations where the old, imperfect life still continues, may be the cure for his distress-Huxley's ingenious fantasy of the future sheds a blazing light on the present & is considered to be his most enduring masterpiece. ...

In January 1991, eight members of the SAS regiment embarked upon a top secret mission that was to infiltrate them deep behind enemy lines. Under the command of Sergeant Andy Mc Nab, they were to sever the underground communication link between Baghdad & north-west Iraq, & to seek & destroy mobile Scud launchers. Their call sign: BRAVO TWO ZERO.

Each man laden with 15 stone of equipment, they patrolled 20km across flat desert to reach their objective. Within days, their location was compromised. After a fierce fire fight, they were forced to escape & evade on foot to the Syrian border. In the desperate action that followed, though stricken by hypothermia & other injuries, the patrol 'went ballistic'. Four men were captured. Three died. Only one escaped. For the survivors, however, the worst ordeals were to come. Delivered to Baghdad, they were tortured with a savagery for which not even their intensive SAS training had prepared them.

Bravo Two Zero is a breathtaking account of Special Forces soldiering: a chronicle of superhuman courage, endurance & dark humour in the face of overwhelming odds.

Product Description

In his 1932 classic dystopian novel, Brave New World, Aldous Huxley depicted a future society in thrall to science & regulated by sophisticated methods of social control.
