Behind Alexia Langley stood the legacy of three remarkable & indomitable women. There was Charlotte who had survived the Afghan war in Victorian times
- Alexandra who had bravely carved a life for herself on a Cornish farm
- & Cara, who was Alexia's mother & who was tough & resourceful & a terrific worker on all kinds of committees.

The trouble was that Alexia, with the example of three wonderful women behind her, wasn't brave or extraordinary at all. She was nervous & shy & wasn't particularly good at anything except cooking. She was totally unsuited for the free-wheeling world of the 60s, & when Martin Angus made a bee-line for her she let herself fall wildly & gratefully in love. At last someone really liked her, in spite of what she was.

It took just over a year for her to discover his betrayal
- for her to realise that from now on she had to fight, for herself, her future, & the future of her child. With a legacy of her own, a crumbling castle in Scotl&, she began to build a new life, shared at first only with little Carly, then at last with someone she could trust.

It was Carly, her small daughter, who was to bring the legacy of love full circle
- back to Afghanistan
- where the story had begun so many years before

She was a thin, lonely child with huge eyes & an extensive vocabulary of French foul language. Amongst the elegant middle-class British families holidaying in Dinard in 1926
- leading their privileged lives of secure routine pleasures

- peripherally
- included in their gracious circles. & there, meeting kindly civilised people for the first time, she fell in love
- with Cosmo
- with Hubert
- with Felix. It took forty years for the love affairs to be explored, consummated, & finally resolved.

As playwright, painter & novelist, Richard Fenchurch has been both successful & rich, but now, in his mid-sixties, he's beginning to fall apart: again. His daughter plucks him from the squalor of his London house & installs him in the old family home, the mansion where he courted his first wife. Here, in a familiar house & in a changed though recognisable landscape, Fenchurch struggles to keep his grip on freedom & sanity, & allows himself to relax into memory. Time is catching up with him, but it is memory that produces the more startling revelation. Fenchurch's love for his wife was real enough
- it was a successful marriage as these things go
- but the old surroundings, both the building & the land itself, bring back to him the irresistibly ardent drive of his passionate affair with Isabella, his fiancee's mother. Returning to fiction after fourteen years, David Storey has created both a sharply comic vision of the indignities of age & a delicately erotic evocation of a youthful & dangerous affair.
