Paris–Roubaix has been in existence since April 1896 and is the most revered of the UCI ProTour one-day races known as the Monuments. Dubbed ‘L’Enfer du Nord’ (The Hell of the North) thanks to its reputation for an incredibly brutal course, the race pitches riders on to a battlefield of punishing cobblestones, known as the ‘pavé’. There are usually 27 sectors of pavé, graded in terms of length and difficulty. Suffice to say that racing road bikes over large and uneven cobbles is extremely tough, especially if, as is often the case, the weather is wet and windy. Since 1977, the winner of L’Enfer du Nord has received a cobblestone trophy.

The Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) was first organised in 1913 as a way of promoting sports newspaper, Sportwereld. Today the race takes place in April, though early editions were often held on the same day as Milan-Sanremo. Regarded as one of the more important Monuments, the big UCI Pro Tour one-day races, it is a source of huge pride for the cycling-mad Flandrians of northern Belgium. Known locally as ‘De Ronde’, and to a lesser extent ‘Vlaanderens mooiste’ (Flanders’ finest), the race is infamous for its steep and narrow cobbled climbs, such as the Kappelmuur and Bosberg, which are always lined with thousands of screaming fans.
