Zelkova Serrata, also known as the Japanese Grey Bark Elm, is a wonderful starting point as you enter the magical world of bonsai, a revered art form in Japan & China for 2000 years. A delightful deciduous tree with a naturally upright growing habit, peeling grey bark & serrated glossy dark green leaves. Years of highly skilled training & pruning have contributed to this elegant miniature tree, already well established in a special ceramic bonsai pot. A native of Japan & China, Zelkova is happy in a cool, bright room away from heat sources. It will also thrive outdoors from early summer where it will soon acclimatise to cooler nights & warmer days. As a deciduous tree, it will lose its leaves in the autumn, when it can be brought back indoors for the winter. Trees that have been kept indoors year-round may retain some of their foliage over winter. Bonsai need regular watering as they can easily dry out. This is especially important if your Zelkova is growing outdoors, when the small amount of compost in the pot can dry out quickly on a warm, sunny day. Regular feeding between March & September is necessary to keep it growing healthily. A light trim will be required each Autumn to perfect the tree's shape. Supplied ready planted, 22-25cm tall including a 12cm ceramic bonsai pot with tray. General Bonsai Tree Care: Watering your Bonsai: Because it is restricted in a small pot, your bonsai will need checking morning & evening to see if it needs watering. Keep your bonsai on its tray; this will catch the water draining through the holes in the bottom of the pot & will create some humidity around your bonsai, especially useful if you have central heating on. Don't let your bonsai sit in water as this can damage its roots. Where to put your Bonsai: During winter place your bonsai in the brightest place possible, avoiding artificial heat such as radiators. If placing your bonsai on a windowsill, keep it out of direct sunlight as they prefer cooler rooms. During the summer, your bonsai will enjoy a spell outside, just remember to keep it in a bright, sheltered position. Feeding your Bonsai: We always recommend feeding your bonsai with a specialist fertiliser
- ordinary plant foods can be too strong for the bonsai & may scorch the roots. Feed once a week to once a fortnight during the spring, summer & autumn. Reduce the feeding to Approx. once a month in mid-winter when it is barely growing. Yellowing of the leaves if the bonsai is deficient in nutrients. How to Prune Your Bonsai: Once new shoots have grown to about 2-3cm, using a sharp pair of bonsai scissors carefully cut back to the first pair of new leaves. Your bonsai has individual branches & you should prune to maintain the gaps between them. Prune regularly to maintain the shape
- start as soon as you get your tree. During the growing season any long shoots or crossing branches should be trimmed back. Fully hardy even in the coldest winters they lose their leaves in winter, only to burst with incredible colour in spring. The stunning foliage changes colour throughout the year, producing an amazing array of colours in Autumn. With this incredible collection you get 3 beautiful & highly desirable Acer plants, carefully selected to give a complimentary colour mix. Acers are slow growing, making them ideal for growing in large pots or smaller gardens, where once planted, they are very easy to maintain, & reward you with gorgeous foliage displays for many years. They do well in light shade, as the brightest Summer hot sun can scorch the paler coloured leaves occasionally. Being slow growing, & difficult to propagate, they are usually much more expensive, but we have a very special offer available. Varieties Included Acer palmatum ' Atropurpureum' Deep burgundy-violet leaves that turn an even more brilliant shade of bright red in Autumn, just before they fall. The classic red-leaved maple. Acer palmatum ' Butterfly' A fantastic variety with lacy, fine foliage. Its leaves are grey green & beautifully margined with cream tinged with pink. It forms a 3m bush in 20 years. A must have for any garden! Acer ' Orange Dream' (AGM) Bright orange new growth, which fades to yellow in the autumn. It is a great specimen shrub that grows to 3m over 20 years. Top Tips- Plants enjoy regular watering & a sheltered position to keep the leaves at their best. Leaf colour is best in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated as long as the plants are well watered. Care Guide Planting Advice for your Acer Collection:- If your soil is slightly acidic, then you have the perfect conditions to grow Japanese maples
- however do not worry if you have not as most can be grown in other soils as long as they are not wet, dry or very alkaline.- If growing in a pot, use a 50/50 mix of ericaceous & multipurpose compost if you can
- although again don't worry overly about this.- If planting in the garden, prepare a wide hole & loosen the soil with a fork, incorporating organic matter as needed to improve moisture retention & condition.- Plant your Acer so that the top of the root ball is just slightly below ground level.- Fill the planting hole with soil & heel well in. Water well. Aftercare advice for your Acers:- Leaf colour is best in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated as long as the plant is well watered.- Avoid exposed places as leaves can suffer with windburn (scorch), especially if the plant is dry.- Allow your Japanese Maple to get used to a whole day in the sun by starting it off in the shade, then standing it in its final sunny spot (in pot or in the garden soil) for one hour longer every day for a week.- Water regularly & deeply.- Feed with our specialist Acer feed.- Mulch every couple of years with well-rotted garden compost or well-rotted manure or leaf mould. Pruning advice for your Acer Collection:- Acers generally do not need pruning, just remove any branches that are dead or damaged. Planting Time: February
