Malus domestica ' Orleans Reinette'
This classic dual purpose dessert/culinary apple is the French equivalent of our Cox's Orange Pippin, thought to have originated from France in the late 18th century. The golden russet fruits are flushed red & have a wonderful, complex, orangey, nutty flavour. Particularly delicious in salads & for accompanying vintage port at Christmas time but also very useful as a cooking apple. In French cuisine it is used in the famous upside down apple tarte ' Tarte Tatin'. The tree is vigorous & has good scab resistance.
