Betula pubescens (Downy Birch; also known as White Birch, European White Birch or Hairy Birch) is a species of birch, native & abundant throughout northern Europe. The Downy Birch has a distinctive brownish grey bark that turns grey white as the tree ages however rather than splintering & splitting as it grows older it remains smooth right down to the base of the tree. Its upright branches produce broad blunt tipped triangular shaped leaves initially green before turning a shade of golden yellow. This deciduous tree displays wild wind pollinated catkins grey in winter & yellow in spring. The Downy Birch gets its name from the downy hairs found on the leaf stalks & shoots. This Birch is a hardy specimen that grows abundantly in poor or wet soils preferably acidic.
