Classic British drama starring Richard Attenborough as school teacher Stephen Leigh. When Stephen meets Tod (Colin Petersen), a young boy accused of shoplifting, & finds out about his unsettled & unschooled life, he is eager to enroll him at his school. When Tod's father (Terence Morgan) announces that he's found work in the US, Stephen offers to look after Tod in his absence. As Stephen & his wife Barbara (Dorothy Alison) are unable to have children, they initially view Tod's arrival as a blessing. But, as the young rascal struggles to adapt to English middle-class life, the couple begin to question their decision. Stephen & Tod, however, share a love of music, & this shared love strengthens the bond between them. Things are looking up for the Leighs until Tod's father comes back from America with his new bride (Jill Adams) & demands the return of his son...
