Traditionally Ethernet networks use 8 conductor cable (or 4 twisted pair) of which four are left spare and not used. These adaptors make use of the spare conductors. In effect the fully wired economizers, to be used in pairs at each end of a cable run, allow Cat.5E data and voice signals to be divided. By plugging one economizer direct into a wall outlet and another into a patch panel at the other end; one cable run of 4 twisted pair can be used to transmit either 2 sets of data, voice or single data and voice signals.
