DESCRIPTION
Omega-3 capsules contain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from fish oil. Polyunsaturated fatty acids are subdivided in omega-3 fatty acids (fatty acids derived from alpha-linolenic acid) and omega-6 fatty acids (fatty acids derived from linoleic acid). Strictly speaking, only linoleic acid and alpha linolenic acid are essential fatty acids,
because the body can make its own metabolites derived from them. However, in case of omega-3 fatty acids, it is difficult for the body to obtain enough EPA and DHA from alpha linolenic acid, since this conversion takes place via the same enzymes as in the omega-6 pathway. Due to the imbalance between omega-6 and omega-3 in the western diet, the conversion of omega-3 (ALA) is therefore very inefficient. In the Western diet the ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids has strongly shifted towards omega-6 fatty acids in the twentieth century. This is particularly due to the use of linoleic acid-rich vegetable oils and fats and a decrease in the consumption of fish. The ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in the Western diet is app. 20-25:1, whereas a ratio of app. 5:1 is
advisable. From an evolutionary point of view, human beings have consumed omega-6 and omega-3 fats in a ratio of (probably) 1:1 for millions of years. Many people would benefit from supplementing their diet with omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 capsules from Bonusan contain omega-3 fatty acids in their natural triglyceride form. It appears that the fatty acids are better absorbed in this form and that they remain longer in the body than the ethyl esters (fatty acid esters). Ethyl acid esters are more often present in strongly concentrated fatty acid products. No endangered fish species are used USE Take 1 capsule 2 to 3 times a day, during or immediately after a meal. Preferably spread your intake evenly throughout the day. This corresponds with an amount of app. 600-900 mg EPA + DHA per day. The dose can be increased to 5 to 10 gram of both fatty acids if necessary. It generally takes 1 to 4 months before the effects of omega-3
fatty acids are noticeable. Capsule may be opened if experiencing difficulties with swallowing. WARNING Using high doses of fish oil (more than 5 gram EPA + DHA per day) may increase the chance of diarrhoea. Caution is advised for people who use anticoagulants (blood thinners). There is an increased risk of internal haemorrhaging when using doses of more than 3 gram EPA + DHA per day (10 Omega-3 capsules or more). Also other interactions with regular medication and other natural health products may occur. Please consult an expert about this. SYNERGISM Simultaneous use of Vitamin E-400 complex (at least 400 IU per day) is strongly recommended due to the high degree of unsaturation of omega-3 fatty acids. There are sufficient natural mixed tocopherols in Bonusans omega-3 products to
prevent oxidation. However, fatty acid oxidation can also occur within the body and hence protection through the simultaneous use of extra vitamin E is strongly recommended.
