With Probiotic & Yeast-Free Food State Riboflavin is beneficially combined in a probiotic base in which it naturally occurs. The probiotic species used (lactobacillus bulgaricus) is a native inhabitant of the human GI tract. Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin, is a water-soluble vitamin occurring naturally in those foods where other B vitamins exist. Riboflavin is resistant to heat, oxidation & acid, although it disintegrates in the presence of alkali or light, especially ultra-violet light. Riboflavin is unique in that not only does it work within the cells to energise, it also functions by cleaning the cells of antagonistic elements. Riboflavin is necessary for cell respiration because it works with enzymes that take the oxygen from the cells. Like thiamin, it functions as part of a group of enzymes that are involved in the production of bodily energy, which utilises fats, carbohydrates & proteins. Riboflavin is the exercisers best friend, in that it is stored in the muscles & used in times of physical exertion. It is also necessary for the maintenance of good vision, skin, nails & hair. Best Natural Sources The amount of B2 found in most foods is so little that it can be quite difficult to get enough of it without supplementing the diet. Good sources of riboflavin are liver, tongue, other organ meats, milk, yoghurt, eggs, brewers yeast & hijiki seaweed. Absorption & Storage Riboflavin is water-soluble, is not stored by the body & must be added to the diet daily through food sources or through supplementation. Riboflavin is easily absorbed through the walls of the small intestine. Milk, which contains riboflavin, should not be stored in clear bottles, since sunlight can destroy the vitamin within a few hours. There is no known toxicity with riboflavin. However, prolonged ingestion of large doses of any one of the B complex vitamins, including riboflavin, may result in high urinary losses of other B vitamins. Therefore, it is often best to take a full B complex with any one B vitamin.
