DESCRIPTION
Betaglucans are complex fibres that naturally occur in the cell wall of several bacteria, yeasts, fungi and plants. In humans, these fibres support the immune system and have a regulating effect. Especially the cellular immune system (macrophages and neutrophils) is influenced by these fibres. The units in the betaglucan fibre may be connected to eachother in different ways. Especially glucans with 1, 3/1, 6 molecular bonds (in contrast to those with
only 1, 3 bonds) are able to activate macrophages and Natural Killer cells (NK cells). To be effective as a nutritional supplement the betaglucans need to be stored in a pure form. If this is not the case, contaminants in the product (such as proteins, fats and mannans) will cover the betaglucans, which makes them bind less well to betaglucan receptors on macrophages. This significantly reduces the stimulating effect on the immune system. However, the purification process is very complex and therefore expensive. Immunonyl from Bonusan is guaranteed to contain 92-96% betaglucans with the important 1, 3/1, 6 bonds. This is the highest percentage currently feasible.
