The painting has great symbolic & religious meaning & is based from a drawing by Michelangelo in 1538. Many artists attempted a version of this drawing but it is this version by Marcello Venusti which is the finest. The painting shows the moment Virgin Mary holds Christ after he is returned to her following the Crucifixion. The painting also shows Saint Joseph watching, & an infant John the Baptist asking for silence from the viewer with a raised finger. The painting is called The Holy Family (II Silenzio) which means the Silence. About this painting The Holy Family (Il Silenzio), about 1550. © The National Gallery, London. Mazzolino, who specialised in small devotional paintings, worked in Ferrara & Bologna. Saint Joseph is identified by his rod that burst into flower, Saint Lucy (whose name means light) holds a burning light. The woman & the child in the foreground have sometimes been said to be saints, but are more probably a mother & her child, the donors of the picture, although the mother's head has been given a radiance. This picture is apparently unfinished & is considerably damaged. The horizontal format showing kneeling donors recommended by saints to the Virgin & Child in a landscape was typical of Venetian painting, & the painting has been attributed to Cariani. ...

The Holy Family With A Shepherd

Although only one shepherd is shown in adoration, the subject of this painting is probably a variation on the Adoration of the Shepherds. An ox and ass are seen on the left and the Annunciation to the Shepherds is visible in the right background. This early work shows the influence of Giovanni Bellini and probably also of Giorgione.
