The painting has great symbolic & religious meaning & is based from a drawing by Michelangelo in 1538. Many artists attempted a version of this drawing but it is this version by Marcello Venusti which is the finest. The painting shows the moment Virgin Mary holds Christ after he is returned to her following the Crucifixion. The painting also shows Saint Joseph watching, & an infant John the Baptist asking for silence from the viewer with a raised finger.
