The Duc d' Orléans (1810
- 1842) was the eldest son of King Louis-Philippe. Ingres painted a three-quarter-length portrait of the duke between 1841 & April 1842 which is still in the family's possession. When the duke was killed in a carriage accident, many replicas of this earlier portrait were ordered, of which this picture is one. It is probably the joint work of Ingres & his assistants, & it is the only one where a cloak covers most of the uniform.
