Author Maryan W. Ainsworth is a curator in the Department of European Paintings at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Jan Gossart (c. 1472-1532) has long been recognized for his pivotal role in disseminating & transforming the art of antiquity & the Italian Renaissance style in the North. This group portrait shows the officials of the guild, which included men who made barrels for the wine imported into Amsterdam & those who sampled & bottled it. The painter's brother Jan is listed among the names which appear in the document on the table, but he has not been identified. In the background is a painting of Saint Matthias, patron saint of the coopers, & the tools carved into the frame are those used by the coopers in the making of the barrels. The name of the guild is written on the seal which hangs over the edge of the table. This type of group portrait, showing the officials of a guild, charitable organisation or civic body, was very popular in the Netherlands during the 17th century. ...

George Stubbs (1724-1806) is now rightly recognised as one of the greatest & most original artists of the eighteenth century. His profound understanding of anatomy & his uncanny ability to translate the study of nature into remarkably balanced compositions mark him out from other practitioners in the field of animal painting. His most frequent commissions were for paintings of horses, dogs & wild animals, but awareness that such subjects were rated low in the artistic hierarchy did not deter him, throughout a resolute & hard-working career, from producing images that invariably arrest attention & frequently strike a deeply poetic note. Stubbs did not emerge as a painter until he was in his mid-thirties & had moved to London, but in the 1760s his genius flowered astonishingly, prolifically & diversely, & his reputation was first established among noblemen devoted to racing & breeding horses. More than any other painter he steadily & uningratiatingly celebrates English sporting & country life & reveals himself, as in his 'incidental' portraits of jockeys & grooms, as a most perceptive observer of different levels of social behaviour. Throughout his career, Stubbs constantly experimented with technique & in the late 1760s he began chemical experiments with painting in enamels, first on copper & later on earthenware 'tablets', manufactured for him in Wedgwood's potteries, although these fascinating works never found public favour. In preparation for many years, this is the first full catalogue of Stubbs' paintings & drawings. This work is a portrait of Giovanni di Nicolao Arnolfini & his wife, but is not intended as a record of their wedding. His wife is not pregnant, as is often thought, but holding up her full-skirted dress in the contemporary fashion. Arnolfini was a member of a merchant family from Lucca living in Bruges. The couple are shown in a well-appointed interior. The ornate Latin signature translates as ' Jan van Eyck was here 1434'. The similarity to modern graffiti is not accidental. Van Eyck often inscribed his pictures in a witty way. The mirror reflects two figures in the doorway. One may be the painter himself. Arnolfini raises his right hand as he faces them, perhaps as a greeting. Van Eyck was intensely interested in the effects of light: oil paint allowed him to depict it with great subtlety in this picture, notably on the gleaming brass chandelier. ...
