A number of figures, on horseback & on foot, are seen beside a fountain. This painting is possibly a companion piece to the artist's ' Meeting Place of the Hunt'. These imagined figure scenes were a favourite subject for Monticelli throughout his career. ...
In the background men are working a bale which is attached to a pulley. In the past the painting has in the past been attributed to Brouwer, but it is too weak to be by him & is merely executed in his style. ...
This painting & ' Three Miracles of Saint Zenobius' are from a series illustrating the life of the 5th-century bishop Zenobius, one of Florence's patron saints, perhaps made as domestic decorations for a patrician family (two other panels from the series survive). The panels illustrate episodes from Fra Clemente Mazza's ' Life of Saint Zenobius', first printed in 1487. Top, from left to right: Saint Zenobius renounces his intended bride; he is baptized by Saint Theodosius, Bishop of Florence; his mother is baptized; he is consecrated Bishop of Florence by the Pope. Bottom, from left to right: the saint exorcises devils from two youths possessed as a result of their mother's curse; he resurrects a dead boy, here lying in the lap of his wailing mother; & he restores the sight of a blind pagan who had promised to convert to Christianity. ...
This is an altarpiece of the Camaldolese Order dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. An inscription which is now no longer visible, recorded that it was painted for Filippo Neroni in 1387 (?). It is probable it was the altarpiece of the Stoldi Chapel in Santa Maria degli Angeli, Florence. In the centre, Saint John baptizes Christ, with God the Father & the Holy Spirit above. On the wings of the triptych are Saint Peter (left), & Saint Paul (right); the predella, or lower section of the altarpiece, shows episodes from the life of Saint John the Baptist. At the far ends are Saints Benedict (left) & Romuald (right). The pinnacles & side pilasters are missing. ...

Four Figures At A Table
This peasant scene is characterised by a sombre dignity, the colours confined to shades of grey and brown contrasted with white, and the food at the table is no more lavish than the colouring. The figures to the right and left, perhaps mother and daughter
