The Virgin is set against a gold-leaf background. Her heavenly nature is emphasised by her jewelled hood-trimming & the intricate patterns punched onto the painting's gilded surface. The Virgin's incomplete halo suggests that the panel may have been cropped at the top. A false attribution to the thirteenth-century Italian artist Cimabue appears in an inscription on the back of the panel. Until recently, the painting was thought to be French but new evidence suggests it was made in the region of Valencia, Spain, in the mid-fifteenth century. Pine panels like the one which this picture is painted were commonly used in the Mediterranean, particularly in Valencia. The thin layers of oil paint & the meticulous attention paid to decorative motifs recall Netherlandish painting, which the artist could have seen in Spain or by travelling to the Netherlands. ...

The painting shows the vision of the Blessed Clare of Rimini, who led a pious life of self-denial & good works (died 1326?). She kneels on the left while Christ, showing his wounds, appears on the right with the Apostles. He gives Saint John the Evangelist a book for her inscribed ' My peace I give to you. My peace I leave you'. The chequered habit she wears is humble cloth, not the habit of any Order. The altarpiece was probably a simple dossal, consisting of three scenes. A companion piece, ' Adoration of the Magi', is in Miami (Lowe Art Museum, Coral Gables). ...

The Virgin: Left Pinnacle Panel Print

In the left panel the Virgin is shown in a pose of adoration. The central panel represents Christ of the Apocalypse as described in the New Testament (Revelation 1: 13). He has a golden girdle; his head and hair are 'as white as snow'; in his right hand he holds the seven stars and in his left the keys of death and hell. Originally he may have held a two-edged sword in his mouth. On the right, John the Baptist holds a scroll with an inscription from the Old Testament (Isaiah 7: 14) 'Ecce virgo co(n)cipiet' (Behold a Virgin shall conceive). The scroll originally read 'Ecce agnus dei' (Behold the Lamb of God), the words usually associated with the Baptist.
