This is an early work, dependent in style & subject matter on the peasant interiors of Isack's elder brother Adriaen. The painting apparently had a pendant, showing an interior with an old man seated by a fireplace & a woman washing a child, when it w ...

Possibly a project for a theatre rather than a view of one actually in existence. The proscenium arch is decorated with various statues & two historiated reliefs of Apollo flaying Marsyas & Pan pursuing Syrinx. The performance has sometimes been identified as Othello. Formerly attributed to the School of Bibiena
- the stage setting may well derive loosely from Bibiena-style designs. There is no very firm indication of date, but the costumes of the foreground figures seem to suggest the first half of the century.

This painting shows the interior of the Buurkerk at Utrecht from the door in the north side looking south-west. The surviving structure is mostly from the 14th & 15th centuries; the multiple columns are the remains of the 13th-century building. Saenredam, in contrast to some other Dutch architectural painters, always attempted to be as faithful to reality as possible when representing existing church interiors. He usually worked from carefully measured drawings produced in the church itself. A drawing by Saenredam (Utrecht, Municipal Archives) dated 16 August 1636 shows the interior of this church from the same viewpoint, & this picture corresponds with the right half of it. The drawing above the signature represents an episode from the popular 13th-century French story of the four sons of Aymon of Dordogne. They are shown escaping on their magic horse Bayard, after one of them had killed Charlemagne's nephew. ...

The Interior Of A Stable Print

Stable interiors of this type were painted by Calraet in imitation of pictures by Philips Wouwermans, such as 'The Interior of a Stable' also in the National Gallery's Collection. Through the archway a family can be seen begging for alms. The surface of the picture is considerably worn so that the wood grain shows, notably in the sky.
