This is an altarpiece of the Camaldolese Order dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. An inscription which is now no longer visible, recorded that it was painted for Filippo Neroni in 1387 (?). It is probable it was the altarpiece of the Stoldi Chapel in Santa Maria degli Angeli, Florence. In the centre, Saint John baptizes Christ, with God the Father & the Holy Spirit above. On the wings of the triptych are Saint Peter (left), & Saint Paul (right); the predella, or lower section of the altarpiece, shows episodes from the life of Saint John the Baptist. At the far ends are Saints Benedict (left) & Romuald (right). The pinnacles & side pilasters are missing. ...

This painting is part of an altarpiece, the main panel of which depicts The Virgin & Child. This section shows Saint Peter; other parts of the altarpiece show Saints Philip, John the Evangelist & John the Baptist. Peter was a fisherman when Jesus invited him to join him & become a 'fisher of men'. He was originally called Simon but Jesus changed his name to Peter, meaning 'rock', to signify that he was the founder of the church. Peter was one of the first apostles to perform baptisms & miracles & is seen here holding the keys to Heaven. ...

This & the related panel of ' Saint Mary Magdalene' by an unidentified Sienese painter are from the right side of a polyptych. A third panel exists showing Saint Paul (private collection). It has been suggested that the centre panel is the Virgin & Child once in the Palazzo Venezia, Rome (from which the painter takes his name), now in the Galleria Nazionale, Rome. ...

From the church of the Carmine in Florence; probably from the chapel of St Andrew there, founded by Ugolino di Bonsi after 1365. The work is concave, which suggests that it is from a vault. The damaged state of the fragment makes an attribution difficult, & it is not known who was responsible for the frescoes in this chapel. ...
