The scene would seem to show an estuary near the sea, perhaps in far western France where Rousseau frequently painted. The sea can be seen in the distance. Rousseau would probably have painted such a small, unassuming image out of doors in front of the ac ...

This painting belongs to a group of 'bambocciate' (scenes of everyday life) set in Rome, many of which show people at work. They are characterised by dramatic contrasts in the fall of light & by a notable simplicity in the architectural & landscape forms in the background. These paintings have been traditionally attributed to Pieter van Laer, but are now regarded as early works by Jan Lingelbach painted during his stay in Rome in the 1640s when he closely imitated van Laer. They have also been attributed to the anonymous ' Master of the Small Trades'. ...

Roman Ruins With Figures Print

The artist painted a number of 'capricci' of this sort in which a known monument is set within a fanciful arrangement of ruins. The pyramid is based on that of Caius Cestius in Rome, while all of the other elements are invented. It has been suggested that this is one of the artist's earlier works and can be dated to about 1730. It may include some intervention by a member of his studio.
