This is a tranquil landscape; it appears to be early evening. Characteristically for van der Neer, the light does not come from the side but emanates from the horizon. The painting probably dates from the early 1650s. It once bore a false Cuyp signature, probably added because the effect of distant sunlight & of pastoral tranquility recalls the work of Aelbert Cuyp. Aert van der Neer, born in Gorinchem & active in Amsterdam, specialised in landscapes at dawn & dusk, scenes lit by moonlight or fire, & winter scenes. He was the father of the painter Eglon van der Neer, whose painting ' Judith' is also in the National Gallery's Collection. ...

Van der Schalcke spent his entire working life in Haarlem & this panoramic landscape is probably based on the coastal sand dunes to the west of the town. These dunes were popular with rabbit hunters, two of whom are resting in the foreground with their dogs. In the past the painting has been attributed to Philips Koninck & subsequently to Jacob Koninck. It is, however, by the same hand as a picture signed by van der Schalcke which was probably painted in 1659 (formerly Vienna, A. Singer collection). The National Gallery's painting should be dated at about the same time. ...

Van der Heyden has combined a view of part of Utrecht Cathedral, at the left, with a depiction of Nijenrode Castle which is at Breukelen, about seven miles outside of the city. Both the sacristy of the cathedral, which can be seen here, & the castle, were subsequently altered, but van der Heyden's view of the cathedral as it was in his day is largely accurate. The painter has, however, shown the sacristy as built of brick rather than stone. ...
