The identity of the sitter is uncertain. It was once thought that the dividers (?) suggested a mathematician, alive around 1494, who is said to have taught perspective to Giovanni Bellini & Carpaccio. However, the sitter could be Gentile's brother, Giovanni, as he looked in the last years of the 15th century. ...

Probably painted around 1535 in the Northern Netherlands. The pansy symbolises thought (from the French 'pensée') & the skull is probably intended as a 'memento mori' (a symbol of human frailty & reminder of death). The costume which appears to be Dutch, suggests the date given above. ...

The sitter & the coat of arms at the upper left have not been identified. In the past the portrait has been described as being of a ' Medical Professor', presumably because of the presence of the skull. But in a 16th century work this is more likely to be intended as a 'memento mori' (reminder of the brevity of mortal life). When it was acquired by the Gallery this painting was attributed to Holbein. Subsequently it has been described as German, Netherlandish & as a work by Neufchâtel. It has also been suggested that the painting is a fake of the early 19th century, but this is not the case. ...

The painting perhaps shows a mathematician; it is likely that the inscription has been incorrectly repainted & should read ' Elementum' or ' Elementa'

The brothel scene or 'bordeeltje' was a popular theme in Dutch genre painting. Here, an elderly woman supervises the proceedings & wine & oysters are offered
- both of which are known for their aphrodisiac qualities. Her age & ugliness is contrasted with the youth & beauty of the young women. This comparison has the moralising overtones of a Vanitas (Latin for vanity) & underlines the transience of earthly beauty & possessions & the inevitability of age, decay & death. Pot, a native of Haarlem who became eventually a citizen of Amsterdam, painted small portraits, guardroom & festive scenes.
