Van der Heyden has combined a view of part of Utrecht Cathedral, at the left, with a depiction of Nijenrode Castle which is at Breukelen, about seven miles outside of the city. Both the sacristy of the cathedral, which can be seen here, & the castle, were subsequently altered, but van der Heyden's view of the cathedral as it was in his day is largely accurate. The painter has, however, shown the sacristy as built of brick rather than stone. ...

When this picture was cleaned in 1969 a false signature in the lower right was removed. It is too coarse in execution to be by Isack van Ostade himself, but is probably by a contemporary follower in Haarlem, like Claes Molenaer (before 1630
- 1676).

In the 17th century oysters (traditionally a symbol of lust) were thought to be an aphrodisiac & the man's offer can be interpreted as a sexual advance. There are several discarded oyster shells scattered around the woman's chair, perhaps an allusion to ...

In the background is a map of the Netherlands, bearing the lion of Holl&. As is often the case in 17th-century maps, north is not at the top but on the right. The map is inscribed in the right background: 'H (?)AR (E?) GE (R?)WANIC UM / DE NO (O?)RT ZEE'. This is a faulty transcription of ' Mare Germanicum', Latin for the North Sea. ...

The old man saluting the women in the kitchen has a flute in his breeches pocket, which suggests that he is an itinerant musician. This monochrome picture ('grisaille'), painted on paper, is a copy of a painting by Jan Steen in an English private collection. It was probably made by (or for) Samuel de Wilde (1748
- 1832) in preparation for his print after Steen's original. The signature cannot be considered genuine.

The weary expressions of the standing trumpeter & even of the dog indicate that the dictating of the letter has become a time-comsuming affair. The playing card (the ace of hearts) next to the dog's hind leg suggests that the letter is a love letter, ra ...

In the background at the right a woman writes on a slate. The man wears archaic late 16th-century dress which can be compared with ' Self Portrait of the Artist, with a Cittern' by Frans van Mieris. This painting is a copy, perhaps of a much later date, of ...
