This landscape is characteristic of the sandy dunes which lie between the artist's native town of Haarlem & the coast, but it is unlikely to represent a specific location. Throughout his career dune landscapes remained Wijnants's principal subject. The f ...

This poster print features Paul Gauguin's A Vase of Flowers. The vase is decorated with only a pattern of gold lines & placed virtually in the centre of the painting, on a wooden ledge where pink & red blooms have fallen. The flowers form a relatively symmetrical pattern with broad blue leaves to each side of cream & red flowers. The muted colours of the background wall & the shelf act as a foil to the exotic flowers that are the central subject of the painting. The painting combines an accurate view of a part of Rome, on the left, with an imaginary ruin, on the right. On the left is the Convento del Sacro Cuore (Convent of the Sacred Heart), & the church attached to it is the Trinità de' Monti (Church of the Trinity on the Hill). These buildings are at the top of what is today called the Spanish Steps, which were not then built. In the distance, at the centre of the picture, is the pope's summer palace on the Quirinal. The old woman in the foreground may be a beggar or a procuress. Although there is no doubt that the landscape was painted by Claude, it has been suggested that the figures may be by another h&. The picture was previously attributed to Frans or Cornelis Decker, but is in fact a characteristic work by van Vries. It can be compared with landscapes signed by van Vries in Munich (Alte Pinakothek) & Stockholm (Nationalmuseum). Little is known about the chronology of van Vries's work but this landscape may date from the early 1660s. ...

A View Across A River Near Dordrecht (?) Print

The vessel on the right is a 'snaauwschip' (a square-rigged two masted vessel usually employed as a despatch vessel; in English, 'a snow') flying a blue ensign with a coat of arms. In the middle distance is a man-of-war with its sails furled flying the Dutch colours. The town on the horizon seems to be Dordrecht, with the Grote Kerk on the left and, towards the right, the Groothoofdspoort. This painting was probably painted in the mid-1660s and almost certainly before about 1692-4 when the spire of the Groothoofdspoort was replaced by a dome.
