Corgi Post War & Modern Military Westland Wessex HU-5, 845 Sqn, Fleet Air Arm, HMS Bulwark 1969 The Westland Wessex is a British turbine-powered version of the Sikorsky S-58 developed under license by Westland Aircraft (later Westland Helicopters), initially for the Royal Navy, & later for the Royal Air Force. The Wessex was built at Westlands factory in Yeovil in Somerset. The Wessex HU (Helicopter Utility) Mk.5 was a Commando Assault version for the Royal Navy, which could deploy 16 Royal Marines Commandos & equipment from ship to shore in a tactical assault. There were 101 of this variant built, serving on the carriers HMS Albion & Bulwark. Corgi Spad XIII - No.23 Sqn RFC, Capt William M Fry, January 1918 (AA37904) The Corgi Spad XIII - No.23 Sqn RFC - Capt William M Fry - January 1918 is a diecast model plane in the Corgi Knights of the Air - The Aces of the Great War (Limited Edition) range. The Spad XIII was not widely used by the RFC and the only unit to be fully equipped with the aircraft was No 23 Sqn. The squadron received its first aeroplanes in December 1917 and by mid-February 1918 it was at full strength with 16 Spad XIIIs. Captain William Mayes Fry served in the infantry before transferring to the RFC in December 1915. By the time he joined 23 Sqn late in 1917 he was already a veteran with experience in Morane-Saulnier and Nieuport fighters. On 4th January 1918 he scored his first Spad XIII kill when he downed
an Albatros DV and on 23rd January he was flying aircraft B6847 when he shot down another Albatros in flames over the Houthhulst Forest. Fry finished the war with eleven kills and went on to become a wing leader in the post-war RAF. After retiring he returned to wartime service for the duration of WWII from 1939 to 1945. Willy Fry died on 4th August 1992. This limited edition model from Corgi is part of the highly collectable Aviation Archive range of die-cast model aircraft. Scales include 1:48, 1:72 and 1:144 and features aeroplanes from World War I, World War II and the modern era. Most models in the Aviation Archive range are limited editions.
