When this book was first published in 1979 it was immediately recognised as the standard work on the evolution of rigging, mast making & sail making. More than twenty years later it remains the most comprehensive & informative work on the subject. Author: James Lees 93 photographs & 540 line drawings 304 pages Hardback The author himself wrote of the genesis of this book: ' As the rigging of contemporary models deteriorated over the years & so few untouched models were still in existence, I felt that a book conveying the various changes in rigging was a necessity to prevent the historical data from disappearing. This book was therefore compiled over some ten years from information obtained from contemporary manuscripts, books, models, etc in the archives of the National Maritime Museum.' He went on to say of it: ' By use of this book it will now be possible for model craftsmen throughout the world, in the present & future, to restore or make models correctly according to the historical features of the various periods. It will assist restorers of marine paintings in the difficult task of replacing obliterated rigging, as well as providing a handbook of technical information for the maritime & war historian.' The first volume examines naval events at Toulon in 1793 where Sir Sidney Smith burnt half of the French Mediterranean Fleet & Howe’s victory over French forces at the ‘ Glorious First of June’ in 1794. Whilst momentous events were taking place in Europe, the Royal Navy was also playing an important role in colonial expeditions as British statesmen looked to the West Indies as a region where small maritime forces could operate against French possessions. The second volume covers the important years of 1797-1799. In 1797 the British Mediterranean fleet had been forced to withdraw by the Spanish declaration of war. Admiral John Jervis based his fleet at Lisbon & attacked the Spanish on 14th June 1797 gaining an important victory off Cape St. Vincent. This victory was followed by the debilitating mutinies at the Nore & Spithead, which shook national confidence in the Royal Navy. Some of this confidence was restored as Admiral Duncan defeated the Dutch fleet at Camperdown in 1797. The following year the Royal Navy re-entered the Mediterranean with dramatic results. Nelson's crushing victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile isolated Napoleon's army in Egypt & secured British control of the Mediterranean. The fourth volume covers the famous years of 1805-1807. 1805 remains the most famous of years for the Royal Navy. The narrative in this volume provides a detailed & in depth account of the Battle of Trafalgar & the death of Nelson. However, the examination of the subsequent years proves that naval history did not end in 1805. In 1806 Duckworth gained a notable victory off San Domingo while Sir Sidney Smith annoyed the French (as well as his superiors & army officers) off the coast of Italy. The Cape of Good Hope was captured from the Dutch & an unofficial expedition arrived in the River Plate. In 1807 Britain was isolated from the continent & controversial measures were undertaken at Copenhagen & Lisbon to prevent the French from seizing neutral navies.
