Narrator David Coleman gives a vivid account of the history of one of London's most famous stations & its associated Great Central Railway & Hotel. The station, first built in 1899 when it had only four platforms, was in its halcyon days graced by some of the most famous names of steam, such as The Flying Scotsman & The Mallard, shown here in the full grandeur. The moving moment is recorded when the last commercial Black Five steams out of the station & rare film footage documents its historic progress north en-route to Nottingham. Marylebone's links with the Golden Age of Steam still linger even today & since 1985 steam specials have been run. The Kent & East Sussex Railway was built in the 19th Century by Colonel Stephens, whose cost consciousness was the stuff of legend. The line wound its picturesque way through the garden of England peacefully until 1961 when it was closed down by British Rail, ironically, in a cost-cutting exercise. The working life of the railway, beginning in the 1930's & is beautifully chronicled in this DVD. Highlights, which include rare colour footage shot in 1950, also tell of the troubled, but ultimately triumphant, efforts of a dedicated band of preservationists to restore the railway to it's former glory & once more send Trains to Tenterden. ...
