Dos Amigos was a slaver, one of the famous early 19th century Baltimore clippers. She was low-slung & fast, double-masted, small & agile, painted black to make it easier to hide herself off the African coast after slaving had been abolished. Her hull was modified, with space below decks to bring the slaves from Africa to Cuba for the sugar plantations. Her last voyage as a slaver was in 1830, sailing out of the port of Havana on 13th July, with a crew of 34 & armed with a single carronade, 16 rifles & 15 pistols. She was captured by the British brig HMS Black Joke, with 567 African captives aboard. She was then put up for auction & purchased by the Commodore of the British Anti-Slavery Squadron, Jonathan Hayes, who converted into an interception ship & named her Fair Rosamond. The “ Montañés” represents the maximum level of perfection achieved by Spanish naval architecture, when Spanish ships-of-the-line were a match for those of any navy in the world. The figurehead of this ship is not the royal lion but a “montañes” (highlander), in gratitude for the financial contribution towards her construction made by the people of the mountains. She was launched in Ferrol on 14th May 1794. It is said that she was an extraordinary vessel, whether sailing close to the wind, running free or with a following wind, & that, more than any other ship, she kept her batteries out of the water. She was engaged in a number of battles, including Trafalgar, where she mounted 76 guns & 4 carronades with mortars, located on her quarter deck. This galleon is a direct descendant of the "caracks", large, distinguished galleons, originally Mediterranean based but later sailing the Atlantic. The name galleon was first given to a type of ship from Liguria, built at the start of the 16th century. Initially designed as merchantmen, they were heavily armed for defence against pirates & other enemies, but ended up becoming men of war after 1570. Although the galleons reached their greatest splendour when they plied the Atlantic, (the height of their development), they were the result of accumulated experiences on the European Atlantic front, & their experiences as merchantmen in the Mediterranean. The galleon named San Martin was built in Portugal & became Spanish property in 1580. It was the flagship of the Spanish Armada. On 22nd March 1588, Alonso Pérez de Guzman, the duke of Medina-Sidonia, admiral of the Spanish armada, unfurled his ensign on the galleon's mainmast.
