PBY 5A Catalina (A05007) The superb amphibious ‘ Cat’ entered service in 1939 & was immediately successful in its various roles. The type from 209 squadron spotted the Bismarck during the famous action in the Denmark Strait in 1941. Weaknesses such as a slow flying speed, lack of crew armour & no self-sealing tanks, led to more suitable roles for the “ Cat”. Coinciding with the development of effective radar, & Japanese reliance on night transport led to the development of the “ Black Cat Squadrons.” Scale: 1:72
