Journal Quilt Challenge: Appliqué from a Photograph by Barbara Howell Barbara Howell demonstrates her appliqué technique from a photo to a finished journal quilt. Barbara devised this design from a tiny part of a photograph of the village where she lives. When on holiday, she watches for collections of interesting rooftops to photograph! Back home, she uses her computer to further select a group of interesting shapes, aiming for a good variety in size & shape & avoiding large spaces of sky or l&. She keeps moving the focus until she has between 15 & 20 separate shapes – usually with straight sides. Barbara uses a very limited colour scheme: many shades of one main colour & small areas of a contrast. In this style of appliqué, some of the raw edges are covered with zigzag stitching, but others are stitched underneath the next one. This project is an extract from Popular Patchwork magazine first published in September 2009. It is a Digital Edition & comes as a downloadable PDF file. ...

Journal Quilt Challenge: Fire & Ice by Ferret To finish off our series of journal quilt challenges, Ferret tackles machine quilting in her own style... Ferret says: Journal quilts offer a great opportunity to learn new techniques, but I never imagined how much I would learn from making these for you. Fire was a very tricky quilt for me to work on, & I nearly didn’t write it up. Then I realised, for some people, this will be the perfect project. For all of you who find it easy to work with small pieces of machine quilting & who find their quilting designs tend to miniature, Fire is the project for you. For those who like to grab a big handful of their project when free machine quilting, I suggest you try Ice. This project is an extract from Popular Patchwork magazine first published in December 2009. It is a Digital Edition & comes as a downloadable PDF file. Template (s) for this project is on the last page of the file. Please check your printer settings when printing to ensure that there are no added margins. Journal Quilt Challenge: Tempting Twins by Pat Stone Pat Stone introduces the delights of using a twin needle... Twin needle work is easy & has many applications including quilting, embroidery, smocking, cording & even free motion embroidery & it’s fun to do! Pat’s journal quilt does not have a theme to it, beyond a love of playing with the twin needle technique. You could adapt this technique to your own journal quilt theme. For example, you could cut different shapes from the twin needled silk rather than squares, such as circles or leaves. Your stitching need not be in straight lines. You can also use the colour to affect the mood of your journal quilt. Think about what you are trying to convey to your viewers & just enjoy experimenting with the technique – how far can you take it? This project is an extract from Popular Patchwork magazine first published in June 2009. It is a Digital Edition & comes as a downloadable PDF file. ...
