The rural areas in the East of England benefited in the halcyon days of rail travel of being connected to the big cities by a network of small railways. The LNER could not use its heavy 'crack' Express trains on the'rural lines, opting instead for the more lightweight engines & coaches designed for such railways. These smaller trains which used the older rolling stock would offer a frequent stopping service as they travelled from village to village & town to town!
